Silver Diamine Fluoride Cavity Treatment

sdf treatment before and after photosImagine being able to help your child have a cavity-free smile? With Silver diamine fluoride (SDF), you don’t have to imagine. SDF is an antimicrobial topical medicament comprised of silver particles and fluoride ion. The treatment is used to slow down or stop dental caries. It has been cleared by the FDA as a medical device to treat dentin hypersensitivity and is also used off label to treat dental caries.

How Does SDF Work?

SDF is a liquid that is applied by a dentist, or another dental provider, directly to a cavity with a small brush. It can help stop cavities from getting worse and can help delay or prevent the need for more invasive treatment. The silver ions and fluoride ions in the medicament help to inactivate the metabolism of the bacteria that cause dental caries and remineralize affected tooth structure.

Treated areas must be actively monitored by a dentist to determine the effectiveness of SDF and whether other interventions are indicated. If the tooth decay is not stopped, it will advance and the tooth will require further treatment.

Major Benefits of SDF

    • Ease of application
    • Effectiveness
    • Low placement cost
    • Avoidance of more invasive treatment

FAQ

Is SDF safe?

Yes! There are no reported cases of significant health risks or severe reactions to SDF. It does, however, contain silver, so it should not be used for people with allergies to silver or who have ulcers in the mouth.

Are there any side effects of SDF?

SDF has cosmetic side effects as it permanently darkens tooth cavities. However, the healthy parts of the tooth will not be stained. It can also cause temporary brown or white stains on skin and gums, which can last up to three weeks.

How else can I help my child prevent cavities?

Brushing twice a day for two minutes at a time, flossing once daily and coming in every six months for checkups can help to prevent cavities.
